Job Summary

The Poultry Health Specialist role is located within the Indiana State Poultry Association. In this role, you will be responsible for performing regulatory compliance duties required for the Indiana National Poultry Improvement Plan and supporting small flock avian health outreach activities.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Accompanying Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) auditors on visits to hatcheries, farms, laboratories, and poultry processing facilities of Indiana NPIP participants for audits of disease testing records, laboratories, biosecurity plans, and other NPIP requirements
  • During the audits, you will help represent NPIP participants’ interests where appropriate, provide participants an update on the status of Blood Testing School and AI Authorized Agent training certifications for their employees, and ensure all required audit topics are evaluated
  • You will provide the ISPA President with a summary of the audit and report on any outstanding issues
  • Developing and implementing programming to increase awareness of avian health best-practices based on NPIP regulations amongst Indiana’s Commercial and Exhibition NPIP Participants, 4-H members, poultry fair participants, and other students
  • Become an USDA subject matter expert in animal carcass management (all training provided by employer) and supporting NPIP Commercial Participants in disease preparedness
  • Seeking proposed changes to the regulations from NPIP Participants, compiling a booklet of proposed changes in advance of the NPIP Biennial Conference, recruiting delegates from amongst Indiana NPIP Participants to fill the slate, coordinating meetings of the Indiana delegation prior to the NPIP Biennial Conference, communicating with other states’ on their stances on proposed changes,  attending and assisting the Indiana delegation at the NPIP Biennial Conference, and preparing a post-NPIP Biennial Conference report for ISPA members
  • Support Indiana NPIP Commercial and Exhibition Participants through entry of information into the NPIP database in cooperation with BOAH staff
  • Communicate/teach applicable laws, regulations and polices in accordance with the ISPA practices and NPIP regulations
  • Assist in organizing the schools and reviewing school material for necessary content; presenting at the Blood Testing Schools; documenting students’ completion of the courses; and supporting timely renewal of certifications
  • Assist with ISPA Public Event Management (Banquet & Golf Outing)
  • Other duties as assigned

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, Poultry Science, or similar science or technical major
  • 2 years of relevant experience (Examples of relevant experience include):
    • Experience working in the poultry industry
    • Experience working in animal agriculture regulatory programs
  • In lieu of degree consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required experience (Associate’s degree + 4 years of experience)
  • Willingness and ability to develop knowledge of NPIP federal regulations and their application to Indiana poultry production
  • Willingness and ability to develop competency in the use and function of the NPIP database system
  • Congenial, effective communicator, both in writing and verbally
  • Organized and dependable, but able to adjust duties and schedules in response to organization and industry needs
  • Independent and self-motivated worker
  • Ability to lift 50lbs
  • Ability to drive an employer-provided vehicle and perform site visits including farms, poultry processing facilities, laboratories, and other industrial environments
  • Overnight travel required on a quarterly basis
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian drivers license
