Job Summary

The senior writer, physical sciences and technology, is responsible for the identification, development, and translation of research stories that illustrate the University’s research achievements, approaches, and impact on the world. The senior writer will report and write about significant research in physical sciences and technology, particularly those fields relevant to national security and defense. The senior writer will engage in strategic planning around research content and University initiatives to develop focused and effective communications campaigns in alignment with Purdue University’s master brand. This communications professional will work with colleagues and partners across campus to develop creative ways to tell stories through traditional, digital, and multimedia platforms. The ideal candidate will have proven reporting experience and the ability to explain complex science concepts to a general audience.

In this role you will:

  • Interact with researchers and staff across Colleges, Centers, and Institutes to identify and translate newsworthy research, programs, partnerships, and initiatives into news stories and other outward-facing communication
  • Develop, manage and implement plans to best publicize the news (news release, news tips, op-eds, direct pitch, video, audio, social and emerging media, news conference, etc.) and create documents and assets to support these efforts in alignment with Purdue University’s master brand
  • Collaborate closely with the news office to arrange and facilitate interviews for experts and sources with a broad range of traditional and trade media
  • Respond to journalists who are looking for information or experts
  • Monitor breaking and research news, industry trends, federal agency initiatives and interests and federal and state legislation. Work with colleagues across the university to create summaries of Purdue experts for topics in the news and reach out to media to place Purdue news and experts
  • Facilitate internal publicity. Convert news stories, multimedia pieces, and other assets into pieces suitable for use by other stakeholders; repurpose content for speeches, presentations, and other engagements by leadership as appropriate

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, English or related field
  • Four years of experience developing and managing strategic content for publications or organizations with a strong technology or research coverage
  • Writing experience essential
  • High level of professional writing skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Skills and experience in media relations and strategic message development
  • Ability to keep abreast of trends, interests, and initiatives in relevant research and technology areas in higher education, industry and at federal agencies

Preferred:

  • Graduate or professional-level training in journalism or marketing/communication
  • Additional training in the sciences
  • Social media experience
  • Higher education experience
  • Experience working with corporations, federal and other funding agencies
