The Scientist is responsible for analytical control strategies and for leading a team in the development, qualification/validation, and use of analytical, bioanalytical and characterization methods in support of biotherapeutic product development. This position is laboratory-based and will require routine interaction with senior scientists across multiple disciplines, project teams, and research laboratories at Elanco. The candidate will be expected to support multiple projects at any given time.

Functions, Duties, Tasks

  • Design analytical studies to establish a detailed understanding of bio- and physicochemical properties of biopharmaceutical drugs.
  • Develop all or portions of analytical control strategies.
  • Development and verification/qualification/validation of analytical methods to support in-process, release, characterization analysis, and stability testing of active pharmaceutical ingredient and drug product.
  • Writing and reviewing protocols for various studies and method validation and transfer to global sites.
  • Preparation of regulatory documentation
  • Provide analytical support for discovery, toxicology, cell culture, purification, formulation, and manufacturing.
  • Oversight for method transfers to development, QCL, or third party personnel.
  • Manage multiple projects within the US and internationally (e.g. analytical technology transfer, stability studies) as required.
  • Coaching, training, and administration of performance management to personnel (primarily, but not limited to, direct reports).
  • Ensure work and team activities are aligned with all relevant development quality, regulatory, HSE, GLP, and GMP requirements.

Basic Qualifications

Ph.D. in analytical, biophysical, biochemistry, molecular/cell biology, or related field; alternatively, skills commensurate with a PhD scientist.

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Extensive knowledge of protein characterization, enzymatic and biopharmaceutical methods.
  • Technical experience in relevant biopharmaceutical & vaccine analytical techniques (e.g. SEC, RPHPLC, IEX, HIC, CE, CE-SDS, ELISA)
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to participate in and facilitate decision-making.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities through effective organizational and time management.
  • Ability to travel within US and internationally as needed.
  • Exceptional problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Must be able to work productively in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Experience with the drug development process, including knowledge of regulatory compliance issues.
  • Fundamental knowledge of cGMP/GLP compliance requirements.
  • Experience with the supervision of direct reports.
