We are excited to announce a new opportunity for a Reactive Chemistry Scientist within the Small Molecule Discovery & Development group, located in Indianapolis, IN with the flexiblity to work multiple days from home.

The principal responsibility in this role will be to evaluate process safety using a mix of experiments, modeling, and process safety experience. Qualified individuals should be able to perform various process safety testing experiments including, but not limited to reaction calorimetry, thermal stability (ARC, DSC, TSU) and explosivity screening, and to analyze data to make safety determinations.

Furthermore, the individual will be responsible for identifying and quantifying hazard and risk, while focusing on the identification of mitigation strategies.  Specific examples of these activities include assessing reactive chemical concerns in MOC’s, evaluating new product chemistry/formulations, defining safe operation envelopes, and responding to emergency situations to prevent loss and damage from uncontrolled chemical reactions or process disruptions. Additional experiences in kinetic modeling, estimating induction times, and autocatalysis are desired.

This role can accommodate a flexible work arrangement where you may work multiple days a week from home.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and conducting experiments using Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC), Thermal Screening Unit (TSu), Reaction calorimetry, DSC, 2-drop/micro RC, Vent Size Package (VSP), TGA, Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE), Flashpoint (PMCC and Seta).
  • Data collection/sample preparation, testing design, data interpretation/application, and kinetic modeling.
  • Identifying process and chemical safety hazards for both new and existing processes to help teams understand and minimize chemical reaction and operational risks especially during scale-up.
  • Awareness of ASTM, UN/DOT as well as local, state and national safety codes related to laboratory operations, including NFPA.
  • Conducting literature searches for relevant process safety aspects (e.g new or alternative test conditions and hazardous properties of materials).
  • Conducting laboratory operations in a safe manner.
  • Providing recommendations for additional equipment or testing needs.
  • High degree of communication of results to project stakeholders.
  • Working with a multidisciplinary team of chemists, engineers, and scientists.
  • Domestic and/or international travel required, estimated up to 10%.

  • Ph.D. with major in chemistry or chemical engineering.
  • Proficiency in basic chemistry laboratory skills.
  • 2 or more years of experience in evaluation of reactive chemicals/chemistry.
  • Knowledge of process safety practices and standards.
  • Knowledge of calorimetry.
