The Senior Specialist will serve as the technical leader in the laboratory for routine equipment/ instrument qualifications/calibrations or maintenance. The senior specialist performs accurate, precise and timely testing of laboratory samples in accordance with approved methods for Elanco Kansas City Quality Control to ensure compliance with cGMP, safety and company requirements.  The specialist interacts with laboratory personnel, Quality Assurance, manufacturing and MS&T to solve problems, improve laboratory practices and methods and to implement improvement in business processes.  Expertise in lab operations, attention-to-detail and thoroughness are critical. The role is responsible for ensuring appropriate review and approval of analytical data. The lab specialist will participate in laboratory investigations, equipment qualification, and maintenance by executing/authoring well-defined protocols and procedures.

Position may have exposure to potential allergens or other environmental hazards.

This position will require RCRA training, handling hazardous material and or waste, and signing manifest documents for the shipment of these materials.

Basic Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in a science field, emphasis in analytical chemistry preferred.
  • Senior Technician with 5 years relevant experience.
  • Required to work in a laboratory environment wearing required personal protective equipment.
  • Proficient in the following computer systems: Empower, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work in a highly regulated environment.
  • Demonstrates strong math and documentation skills.
  • Able to prioritize to meet customer needs and demonstrates shift flexibility (unscheduled overtime may be required).
  • Good customer service and multi-tasking skills.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills.

Additional Preferences

  • Expertise in performing the following types of assays: HPLC, GC (including headspace analysis), IR, UV/Vis, Dissolutions and routine wet chemistry.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with method development (LC/GC), method validation and troubleshooting analytical assays.
  • Thorough knowledge of cGMPs and laboratory quality systems.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical thinking skills.

SAFETY

  • Be the safety role model to laboratory personnel, ensuring that proper PPE is always utilized.
  • Identify and eliminate laboratory hazards, where possible.
  • Provide peer-to-peer feedback, where appropriate.

QUALITY/COMPLIANCE

  • Primary contact for equipment and method performance troubleshooting.
  • Perform analytical and physical testing on in-process, finished product, and stability samples.
  • Accurate, precise and timely execution of analytical methods and related support activities as per procedures/protocols. Adherence to structured work flow to maximize productivity is expected.
  • Performs data entry and verification reviews with utmost diligence and attention-to-detail in accordance with procedures, standards and GMP requirements.
  • Ensures compliance with all equipment, procedures, safety and regulatory commitments in Quality Control.
  • Recognizes suspect analytical results and deviations from procedures.

 

TECHNICAL

  • Requires trainer level expertise in multiple areas of the laboratory, including: techniques, equipment and computer systems.
  • Exhibit technical expertise with chromatographic methods (including headspace analysis) and USP methodologies.
  • Challenge current practices and raise the bar on laboratory performance.
  • Act as an investigator on laboratory investigations and identifying root cause.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and methods as required

BUSINESS

  • Training and mentoring of others in the lab on analytical methods, equipment qualifications and routine equipment maintenance.
  • Assist co-workers to timely execution of duties within QC laboratory.
  • Participate in special projects to enhance safety, productivity and quality.
  • Participate in inspection readiness activities.  Exhibit cross-functional influence

Other Information:

  • Overtime required as needed to meet the business needs.
  • Laboratory work requires the handling of hazardous materials, including possible allergens.
  • Task require repetitive motion and standing for long periods of time.
  • Some exposure to hormones, potential allergens or other environmental hazards possible in laboratory environment.
