Overview

The College of Agriculture’s Plant Sciences Initiative, a Purdue Next Moves, seeks a Computational Infrastructure Specialist to strategically lead the development and integration of advanced sensor suits across the College of Agriculture’s current controlled environment facility (Ag Alumni Phenotyping Facility (AAPF)) and field-based work at the Indiana Corn and Soybean Center (ICSC). The position is responsible for creating and improving standard and efficient data collection and processing procedures to address business requirements, ensure system scalability, security, performance, and reliability.

What You’ll be Doing
This position manages the electromechanical infrastructures that enable the automated operation in Purdue’s controlled/semi-controlled environment phenotyping facilities. This includes creating project plans in partnership with other staff at AAPF and ICSC and monitoring project performance metrics to ensure that data can be delivered in a timely and efficient manner. The Computational Infrastructure Specialist communicates with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and must have strong communication skills and the ability to bring others together to achieve a common set of outcomes. Demonstrated expertise in developing complex data infrastructure systems and familiarity with advanced sensors is imperative in this position. This position independently collaborates with stakeholders and works under limited supervision.  The Computational Infrastructure Specialist works in partnership with AgIT to establish and ensure continuous system integrity, usage, and performance; maintain security on restricted data and grant access when appropriate.

This position is responsible for strategic planning related to data infrastructure needs across AAPF and ICSC, develop operational plans and support budget planning processes for the units. The role may also informally coach and supervise other positions who contribute to data management activities.

What You Must Have
-Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, computational biology, agricultural, biosystem engineer or similar field
-Six (6) years of experience in data/software engineering or sensor instrumentation
-Experience in senor networking, sensor, and data pipeline integration and with programming languages such as Python, R, C/C++, Matlab
-Strong knowledge and experience in data/software engineering, specifically in sensor networking
-Knowledge and experiences in multiple programming languages and platforms, such as Python, R, C/C++, Matlab; Familiar with Big data/Database technologies
-Capability to work independently or as a team member
-Strong skills in spoken and written English
