Overview

The Horticulture / Greenhouse Technician is an experienced individual contributor who assists the Plant Growth Facility Manager in daily operations and upkeep of the facility. This position carries out integrated pest management procedures to minimize pests in controlled environments and ensures proper irrigation and fertilization of crops while working under limited supervision. Additional duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Provides ongoing pest control measures under limited supervision
  • Scout plants weekly, diagnose insect and disease problems, and implement appropriate applications of cultural, biological and chemical controls
  • Keep EPA-mandated records
  • Effectively coordinate insect control efforts with researchers
  • Train and oversee students assisting with irrigation and provide written instruction
  • Install, monitor and repair automated irrigation systems
  • Program irrigation valves using Priva controls
  • Independently researches literature on new pest control techniques; seeks advice from peers and experts, both internal and external to the university
  • Conduct trials of biological and chemical controls to determine best methods for our facility
  • Collaborate with and assist researchers with questions on pest control, greenhouse usage, resources, policies, etc.
  • Conduct demonstrations and presentations for classes as requested
  • Provide ongoing greenhouse sanitation such as trash removal, pressure washing, etc.
  • Track inventory, order, and organize supplies
  • Install equipment such as photoperiod curtains, humidifiers, lights, etc.
  • Operate a power lift for safe work in upper canopy of greenhouses
  • Develop understanding of Priva and Conviron environmental control software to assist manager and respond to emergencies in manager’s absence
  • Assist manager with after-hours temperature alarm response on alternate weekends

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, entomology, plant sciences, or a related field
  • 2 years of work experience involving plant care in a greenhouse/nursery setting
  • Must be able to obtain an Indiana pesticide applicator license within 30 days
  • Must complete Aerial Work Platform Safety Certification within 30 days
  • Demonstrated effective customer service provider in a retail, volunteer or organizational setting
  • Ability to use tact and courtesy during professional interactions
  • Knowledge of watering containerized plants
  • Capacity to assemble irrigation systems with small tools
  • Capacity to diagnose insect and disease problems and implement control measures
  • Capacity to conduct greenhouse trials to determine efficacy of biological controls
  • Skilled at maintaining an organized workplace
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to train and provide instructions to student workers
  • Willingness to flex work hours for occasional weekend assignments
  • Must be a proficient user of Microsoft Office applications and be able to effectively communicate with others
