The Research Associate will manage a field research program and assist the Principal Investigator (PI) and graduate students with field and greenhouse research. Research will involve establishment, maintenance and completion of studies to determine best integrated management strategies to control plant diseases. Additional duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Performing field research experiments based on research objectives
  • Using discretion and independent judgment in all areas of research including choosing methods and strategies and avoiding loss of valuable research time and resources
  • Day-to-day research procedures are self-determined
  • Troubleshooting experiments, then using own judgment, decide next course of action based upon experiment results
  • Coordinating research with cooperators around the state and in other states
  • Maintaining field and greenhouse equipment and modifying and repairing mechanical equipment
  • Managing field research program and assisting PI in developing and implementing research plans
  • Designing and performing field experiments
  • Advising graduate students, undergraduate students, post doctorial staff and service personnel concerning research on a day-to-day basis and advising on different experiment techniques
  • Assisting PI in preparation of all oral and written communication including manuscripts, grants, reports to sponsors and conference presentation as well as assisting in technical papers for publication
  • Responsible for knowledge and awareness of all safety regulations and proper methods for handling potentially dangerous chemicals, pathogens, substances and materials
  • Collecting and maintaining pathogen culture collections, and preparing inoculum for greenhouse and field work


  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Ag Systems Management, Plant Pathology or closely relate
  • 2 years of related experience
  • In lieu of degree consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required experience (Associate’s degree + 4 years of related experience)
  • Knowledge of field and farm equipment, trouble shooting and problem solving skills
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian driver’s license
  • Must obtain CDL within six months
