Overview

The Fertilizer Control Specialist will perform a variety of state compliance activities for fertilizer laws and regulations throughout the State of Indiana as well as complete field investigations, inspection and related compliance activities designed to ensure that fertilizers are stored, used and distributed safely and legally in Indiana. Additional duties will include but are not limited to:

 

  • Serve as lead investigator for fertilizer complaints
  • Investigate complaints, collect evidence, and develop a case summary
  • Explain and interpret rules to targets and complainants, often in difficult situations
  • Inspect bulk fertilizer and pesticide storage areas
  • Coordinate with field staff inspections and their findings
  • Generate inspection reports
  • Design and review fertilizer and pesticide containment systems
  • Prepare documents for facilities that qualify for the state property tax deduction of assessed value
  • Effectively represent Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC) in a professional manner at presentations, trade shows, public hearings and other events
  • Have proficient knowledge of all OISC rules from all program areas

Required:

  • Bachelor’s in Agriculture, Engineering, Technology, Supervision or related area
  • 4 years of relevant experience
  • In lieu of degree consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required experience (Associate’s degree + 6 years of related experience; HS diploma/GED + 8 years of related experience)
  • Ability to efficiently investigate complaints including building and documenting a case
  • Skills in problem solving, working with people and managing several projects at the same time
  • Knowledge of general agriculture operation and fertilizer industry practices
  • Must have strong oral/ written communication and public speaking skills
  • Able to comprehend scientific/technical materials
  • Ability to interpret laws/regulations, resolve conflicts and prioritize work
  • Travel
