Job Summary

As the Assistant Forester, you will work under the direction of Purdue Forestry and Natural Resources property managers in southern Indiana to implement management of forest properties located in Indiana. In this role, you will maintain properties, support research projects and extension/teaching programs and provide services to faculty and staff as directed, both locally and across the Indiana. Additional duties will include but are not limited to:


  • Conduct forest management practices including: invasive plant control, forest inventory, timber stand improvement, wildlife habitat improvement, prescribed fire, timber marking and harvesting, property boundary marking, and road and trail construction and maintenance; These practices often involve the use, transport, and servicing of various types of large and small farm/forestry equipment
  • Cooperatively manage research plantations including planting, spraying pesticides, tree removal, mowing, fencing, and fertilization
  • Implementing professional communication and organizational skills by the proficient use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other common software programs,
  • Coordinating GIS and mapping efforts on FNR properties
  • Cooperating in forest management planning and data management


Permanent work station will be at the Southeast Purdue Agricultural Center near Butlerville, Indiana.


  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry
  • Ability to perform long days of hard physical labor and work in natural environments and four-season weather conditions
  • Ability to travel overnight as needed throughout Indiana
  • Ability to operate and maintain, at a basic level, equipment, including tractors, dozer, skid steer, mowers and chainsaw
  • Mapping and/or GIS capabilities
  • Ability to become a licensed pesticide applicator, obtain a commercial driver’s license and red card (fire safety) certification, and complete first aid training
  • Excellent customer service skills and professionalism in dealing with students, staff, and business customers
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build work relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail
  • Motivated individual with ability to efficiently multi task, work under pressure, handle interruptions and meet deadlines
  • Ability to identify and determine problems, analyze information, and implement solutions
  • Capable of taking initiative, assuming responsibility, and handling confidential information with discretion
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Must possess a learning orientation to changing technology



  • 3 years of applied forestry experience
  • Ability to become a FAA licensed drone pilot
  • Ability to haul equipment on trailers
  • Knowledge of prescribed fire or fire behavior
  • Proficient in Arc mapping software
