Job Summary
The Purdue Applied Research Institute (PARI) is seeking a founding Senior Director of Research Programs & Analytics for the new Digital Innovation in the Agri-food Systems Laboratory.

As the founding Senior Director of Research Programs & Analytics, you have the rare opportunity to shape the research program for the new Digital Innovation in Agri-Food Systems Laboratory at Purdue (DIAL).  Working with the Executive Directors of DIAL and the Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability (CFDAS), you will coordinate and lead the research functions of these initiatives.

These initiatives will develop an innovation ecosystem to bridge the digital and data gaps between consumers, food, and agriculture.  You will be responsible for strategic planning, operational oversight of the two research groups, and fundraising. The agri-food Systems Modeling Group will use science-based analysis tools and systems modeling to inform decision-making on complex digital agri-food systems innovations and their effects on food safety, health, sustainability, competitiveness, and transparency. The CFDAS Group performs all-source analysis on issues related to consumer trends, preferences, and attitudes regarding food and agriculture and curates these data and findings in publicly consumable dashboards.

The Senior Director of Research Programs and Analytics and the Senior Director of Business Development and New Ventures will form the core leadership team responsible for creating DIAL and CFDAS with an integrated organizational vision and mission, culture, workforce, and capability stewardship plan.
What You Will Do

Support program development for the broader missions of DIAL, CFDAS, and other collaborating groups at Purdue, including developing proposals, technical demonstrations, and presentations
Identify existing and new sponsors requiring digital and data technologies, capabilities, or products, and will develop new programs with those sponsors
Lead a talented team of modelers, data analysts, and Purdue graduate students to develop sophisticated models of agri-food chains from agricultural inputs to consumers with special attention to agent-based behaviors across the supply chain, consumer demand shifts, and the role of digitization of the food system
Ensure that new programs have agri-food systems digital/data impact for the programmatic sponsor while simultaneously developing capabilities supporting the core missions of DIAL and CFDAS

Qualifications
What We Need

-Bachelor’s degree in economics, statistics, applied mathematics, engineering, or relevant STEM field
-Eight (8) years of professional work experience, with significant experience in management and leadership
-Technical Understanding and Experience in simulation modeling and/or data analytics
-Working knowledge of simulation, database, and data analytics software (AnyLogic, Python, SQL, R, etc.)
-Excellent communication skills, including the ability to accurately summarize technical topics for staff, sponsors, and stakeholders—each with varying levels of technical expertise
-Demonstrated ability to grow internal and external collaborative relationships, emphasize teamwork, and build consensus when appropriate
-Experience leading and managing a portfolio of projects, budgets, and people in a complex ecosystem having time and data-sensitive projects topically aligned with the mission of the enterprise
-Demonstrated behaviors that promote a productive, inclusive, respectful workplace
-Experience in fostering organizational capabilities and achieving strategic goals
What We Prefer

-Master’s or Ph.D. degree in economics, statistics, applied mathematics, engineering, or relevant STEM field
-Insight into one or more of the target funding groups (e.g., industry, government agencies, NGOs, and/or Foundations with interest in food and agriculture industry and supply chains, and/or food consumers)
-Successful collaboration across organizational boundaries, such as collaboration between industry and universities

Additional Information

This position requires the willingness to travel in the US and internationally, usually around 40% of the time
