Overview

At Corteva Agriscience, you will help us grow what’s next. No matter your role, you will be part of a team that is building the future of agriculture – leading breakthroughs in the innovation and application of science and technology that will better the lives of people all over the world and fuel the progress of humankind.

Molecular Characterization group in Seeds Regulatory Science is currently seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Molecular Genomics to join its dynamic team. The position will be in Global Business Center in Johnston, IA. The Post-Doc scientist will lead its NGS effort in planning, executing, monitoring experiments, analyzing in-depth large genomic datasets from NGS projects, and presenting/delivering results and conclusions for molecular characterization studies in compliance with all safety, regulatory, and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) in support of safety assessments conducted for regulatory submissions for our genetically modified crop products.

Responsibilities:
How will you help us grow? It matters to us, and it matters to you!

  • Develop NGS sample preparation methods using established molecular biology techniques and by exploring novel solutions.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement new NGS methods and technologies to enable the expansion of tools available for characterizing diverse crop products.
  • Communicate with internal stakeholders to provide key input into the development and implementation of NGS (Illumina, PacBio) strategies.
  • Independently analyze genomic data including quality control from high-throughput sequencing projects through established pipelines to ensure data quality.
  • Design and implement the development of bioinformatics workflows to automate frequently used analytical procedures, which may include modification of processing pipelines, statistical models, and analysis methods, for adapter trimming, assembly, alignment, variant calling, and data visualization to meet regulatory agency’s requirements.
  • Play an active role in identifying, solving, and managing a variety of technical issues or challenges.
  • Keep records of developmental work, document experiments, calculate, graph and compile NGS results, interpret data, and write and review complex technical documents.
  • Assist in developing internal databases

Qualifications

Requirements:
What expertise have you grown? What do you bring to the table?

  • PhD or equivalent degree in the fields of Plant Biology, Molecular Biology, Functional Genomics, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, or related fields.
  • Extensive demonstrated experience in NGS platforms (PacBio, Illumina) and workflow (including WGS and targeted sequencing), spanning sample preparation through downstream data analysis including use of alignment, assembly, and variant calling tools.
  • Excellent understanding of NGS platforms, specifically those utilizing the synthesis by sequencing technique, and their applications and critical factors influencing data quality, and an ability to troubleshoot the sequencing process end to end.
  • Scripting experience in coding languages (i.e., bash, awk, python, R, etc.). At least one scripting language, such as Python or R, and associated packages for data analysis and visualization.
  • Deep understanding of molecular biology techniques to guide selection of library-preparation approaches and experience in molecular biology and genetics/genomics including DNA/RNA isolation and manipulation, vector cloning, PCR, qPCR, NGS library prep, QC and sequencing.
  • Demonstrated superior ability for experiment planning, execution and troubleshooting, and ability to develop/optimize NGS experiments.
  • Demonstrated skills in organization, analysis and communication.
  • Proven ability to work independently and in collaborative team environments.
  • Must be authorized to work for Corteva in the United States without work authorization sponsorship.
