Position Summary: 

The IP/BD Legal Operations & Data Consultant is an important role supporting our team in our Global Intellectual Property (IP) & Business Development (BD) Legal team.  The successful candidate will support operations and process discipline to the team by providing integral data, process, and administrative support in various legal, intellectual property and business development matters.  Key to the role is providing direct and supportive assistance to the department in such areas as docketing, case management, formal filings and asset management, invoicing and billing, software and technology solutions, external counsel interactions and mgmt., data analytics and metrics, back-office operations, education, and various other legal projects and engagement in our operational work streams.  Also key to the role is delivering timely and accurate support and information to the team of legal professionals, creating and communicating informational reports to internal clients and counsels, ensuring operational compliance to processes with data integrity, enhancing efficiency and effectivity by improving work streams and legacy operations, and identifying risk areas to mitigate and avoid exposure.  The role will work closely with professionals across the global team and other functions.


  • Conduct analysis, processing and data reporting for IP/BD operations to measure, account, report and ensure accuracy of business operations, budgets, records management, filing and docketing compliance, external counsel management and invoicing, invention development processes, and cases / case management of assigned activities within the operation.

  • Develop, deliver and communicate reports as assigned involving metrics and operational data, review and present monthly status and performance metrics with direction for correction or progression, and identify further data-driven measurements to improve the operation and/or reduce costs/risks.

  • Support all IP & BD activities, patent and trademark docketing, compliance and management processes, contract and IP matters management processes and systems, and provide effective data management / processes of electronic files for records retention, litigation and on-going business operations.

  • Develop informational reports and reporting cadence for key data, metrics and performance goals for organization and customers.

  • Provide customer-focused solutions and interaction with internal clients, team members and colleagues as a business partner to drive premier performance.

  • Conceive, share and continually develop better ways of managing data and improving operations for the department.

  • Maintain proficiency with commercial patent searching databases, internal data systems, reporting systems, and proprietary databases to extract and best utilize multiple data sources to yield accurate reports and best data situations to assist in achieving department performance is aligned with budget compliance.

  • Facilitate portfolio audits, annual reviews and valuations, incentive programs, optimized maintenance processes, etc.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or operations preferred

  • At least five (5) years direct legal operations experience, with increasing responsibilities in high-performing legal operations.

  • Strong experience and familiarity with US and European intellectual property operations, IP asset lifecycles, complex business transactions processes, annuities, maintenance payments and calculations, and competitive / data analytics.

  •  Proven ability to consolidate complex situations into operable processes, presentations and effective management systems, and have success in communicating results in an understandable manner with members of various internal client teams – business, finance and legal.

  • Passion for operations excellence, with a self-driven and positive outlook to effect innovative and creative change.

  • Must have experience working with inventors and team members in geographically-dispersed regions, accommodate challenging timelines, and have participated in innovation and patent generating initiative / processes.

  • Must be culturally aware and routinely demonstrate communications, actions and values consistent with our progressive, diverse and inclusion environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform successfully in cross-functional team.

  •  Be able to handle multiple projects in fast-paced environment and be able to quickly step in in situations where resources may be restricted or timing is constrained.

  • Proven experience successfully navigating corporate legal operations and environments.

  • Proven ability to educate internal clients on processes, procedures and risks associated with awareness education, performing with complete integrity and consistently delivering on promises made.

Additional Skills & Preferences:

  • Strong business acumen and mindset towards collaboration

  • Previous in-house experience in pharma, animal health, US-based and EU-based organizations

  • Experience in commercial legal software such as but not limited to products involving: MDC, IManage, IPManager, CounselLink, ANAQUA, ICERTIS, Dennemeyer, Thomson, Clarivate, PatSnap, CPA, AcclaimIP, etc.

  • Preferred experience in docketing, paralegal activities and case management handling IP issues involving patents and trademarks in fields of pharmaceuticals, biotech, medical devices, business intelligence, and/or animal health

  • Paralegal certification(s) in corporate law practice, patent, and/or trademark, etc.

  • Previous experience in brand protection and IP portfolios globally

  • Multiple languages – speak/read preferred.

  • Six Sigma certification

  • This role can be located anywhere in the US with ability to travel to Elanco’s corporate headquarters in Greenfield, IN, as needed.
