Position Description:

The process engineering consultant/advisor is the technical leader in the operations area he/she is assigned within the Clinton site, Elanco’s largest US manufacturing center. He/she will be a subject matter expert with respect to the process and the equipment, engaged in troubleshooting, data analysis, and regulatory compliance. He/she will also lead the continuous improvement of the operations area and drive capital and expense projects from inception to final implementation. To do this, the process engineer will play a key role in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver innovation to the operations area considering the aspects of safety, reliability, quality, operability, throughput, and cost.

 

Your Role: 

Process Engineer 

The Process Team Engineer holds responsibility for providing technical support to Production operations, encompassing process oversight, equipment management, troubleshooting, implementing capital improvements, conducting data analysis, and ensuring regulatory compliance. A pivotal role is played in reducing variability and enhancing overall reliability within the operations.

 

Your Responsibilities:  

  • Act as a subject matter expert and, if required, serve as a Project Manager for both Capital and non-Capital projects, overseeing all aspects from initial scoping to final execution.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives for processes and equipment, involving design, estimating, proposal development, finance management, and project implementation. Collaborate with other departments to successfully complete assigned tasks.
  • Become the equipment expert and asset steward within the Process Team’s scope. This includes a deep understanding of equipment design, control strategies, and the inherent hazards of the manufacturing process.
  • Provide support from initial equipment qualification through the asset lifecycle. Ensure assigned equipment is properly maintained and monitored by creating or approving preventive maintenance plans. Manage daily operations using statistical tools, historian charts, and Root Cause analysis.
  • Maintain and generate documents to ensure compliance with local, state, federal, and international codes and regulations, such as cGMP, CAPA’s, and Change Control.

 

What You Need to Succeed (minimum qualifications):

  • Education: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in a regulated, commercial GMP biomanufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, encompassing hands-on responsibilities for scoping, design, configuration, validation, deployment, and maintenance of new Production control systems and system upgrades.

What will give you a competitive edge (preferred qualifications):

  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify problems, recognize symptoms, pinpoint causes, and propose alternative solutions. Capable of making timely, sound decisions even under conditions of risk and uncertainty.
  • Ability to provide 24-hour process and system support to ensure business continuity for production operations.
  • 5-10 years’ experience supporting a manufacturing process in a highly regulated environment.
  • Variety of previous engineering roles and experiences.
  • Experience in lean/continuous improvement, Aspen process modeling software, and PI process data historian.
  • Capable of applying Root Cause Analysis techniques to investigate issues.
  • General knowledge of various liquid and dry product processing and handling equipment including, but not limited to, fermenters, piping systems, evaporators, centrifuges, dryers, conveying systems, granulating equipment, mixers, and packaging systems.
  • General knowledge of various emission control and monitoring equipment including, but not limited to, baghouses, cyclones, carbon adsorbers, condensers, total hydrocarbon analyzers, mass flow meters, and opacity monitors.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities especially in a team environment as well as knowledge and experience in project management.
  • Self-motivated team player with the ability to work, prioritize multiple activities, and deliver results with minimal supervision.

 

Functions, Duties, Tasks:

Process Engineering:

  • The primary focus for this position will be applying engineering principles and expertise to implement large, challenging, and critical projects that will result in positive business impact such as positive NPV (Net Present Value), cost reduction, cost avoidance, increased product capacity/supply, and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead meetings and project teams to ensure safe, timely, on-budget, and successful implementation of projects. This includes operational, capital, and cross-functional projects, providing leadership in defining the scope, overseeing design and construction, and performing qualification activities.
  • Be knowledgeable of all regulatory (quality/safety/environmental) policies and procedures and hazards of the process.
  • Ensure changes to the process/equipment are documented through the change management system.
  • Be knowledgeable of computer systems to provide assistance in troubleshooting the process by using a data-based approach.
  • Use risk management in decisions and/or proposals.
  • Drive continuous improvement throughout the process. Participate and support Six Sigma initiatives.
  • Assist with day-to-day production issues and projects as needed.

 

Business Influence:

  • Use expertise to provide engineering assistance in other projects outside process area (e.g. sitewide, other departments, other sites).
  • This position will serve as a technical and professional mentor for other engineers on the Clinton site.

 

Knowledge Sharing:

  • Give technical presentations.
  • Share and replicate technical solutions.
  • Prepare technical documentation (technical reports, root cause investigations, etc).

 

Other Information:

  • 8-hr. shift. Attendance at some meetings outside of normal work hours will be required. Work is usually performed Monday through Friday; however, one may be called in on weekends or evenings for process support.
