Your Role: Analytical Scientist – Mass Spectrometry

 

This position is laboratory-based and will require routine interaction with scientists across multiple discovery and core research laboratories at Elanco.  The incumbent scientist will be expected to support multiple projects at any given time. The scientist will independently plan, perform, interpret and report results of scientific experiments. Responsible for leading characterization studies of large molecules within Elanco and across the global sites as well as at CRO’s. The scientist will also act as a matrix lead and a mentor to other laboratory scientists by providing training and reviewing various methods and making recommended changes to scientific protocols and procedures. This position will also be responsible for implementing R&D strategies to optimize analytical methods through principles of quality by design (QbD).

 

Your Responsibilities: 

  • Demonstrate competency in troubleshooting, optimization and implementation of challenging and innovative LC-MS/MS assays
  • Perform LC-MS workflow including sample preparation, method development and execution, data acquisition and analysis, and report writing
  • Adhere to established Standard Operating Procedures and contribute to validation protocols, reports
  • Develop understanding of degradation pathways, post-translational modifications of biopharmaceutical and therapeutic vaccine products, contributing to analytical control strategy and specifications.
  • Innovate characterization approaches for diverse drug formulations, providing rapid analytical support for bioprocesses and formulation development.
  • Present findings in technical teams, author reports, and maintain laboratory safety standards, ensuring instrumentation readiness.
  • Train and coach associates globally, promoting knowledge exchange and consistent practices across sites.

 

What You Need to Succeed (minimum qualifications):

  • Education: Minimum BS with 12+ years or MS with 10+ degree experience or PhD with 2-3 years of experience in Analytical chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics or relevant scientific discipline in biotech/biopharmaceutical industry.
  • Required Experience: A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in LC-MS
  • Top Skills: Hands-on experience with chromatographic separation of large molecule analytical characterization (recombinant protein, monoclonal antibodies, oligonucleotides, peptides, etc.) and quantitation by MS or MS/MS; proficiency with mass spectrometry software as well as spreadsheet, In-depth knowledge and extensive hands-on experience in developing a variety of analytical methods like HPLC/UPLC-based methods like RP-HPLC, AEX, SEC, and electrophoretic methods like cIEF and capillary electrophoresis along with experience in validation, transferring and qualifying analytical methods at CMOs for protein therapeutic development programs including familiarity with applicable GMP requirements.

  • Large/Small-molecule mass spectrometry experience
  • Experience with various statistical methods including proficiency in various statistical software.
  • Experience in using electronic laboratory notebooks.
  • Highly focused and detail oriented, with high personal ethical and quality standards.

  • Must be able to work productively in an interdisciplinary team environment.

 

Additional Information:

  • Travel: Up to 5-10% travel
  • Location: Global Elanco Headquarters – Greenfield, IN – Hybrid Work Environment (Move to new Global Headquarters in downtown Indianapolis early 2025)
